PhoenixSuit Stuck at 7%? Fix the Flashing Progress Freeze
The progress bar freezes at 7%, the device gets warm, and nothing moves for 20 minutes. Here is why it happens and the fix that works in most cases.
Why PhoenixSuit Freezes at 7%
The flash is not stuck at a random point. The 7% mark is the handoff between the first and second flashing stages: PhoenixSuit has finished writing the boot loader (boot0/boot1) and is switching to a faster USB transfer mode for the system image. If a USB packet is lost during that handoff, the tool waits forever for an acknowledgement that never arrives — the bar freezes at 7%.
Because the cause is USB communication instability, the fix is almost always about the cable, the port, or the driver — not the firmware image.
Fix It in 4 Steps
- Replace the USB cable — this fixes it 9 times out of 10. The 7% freeze is the cable’s fault in the vast majority of cases. Thin charging cables and unshielded cheap cables drop packets under the high-speed bulk transfers of the second stage. Switch to a shielded USB-A male-to-male data cable (not a charging-only cable): get a proper shielded USB data cable.
- Plug into a rear motherboard USB 2.0 port. Front-panel ports and USB 3.x ports go through hubs and extra wiring that add noise. Use a USB 2.0 port directly on the motherboard (rear of the PC). If you must use a hub, use a powered one: powered USB 2.0 hub.
- Reinstall the Allwinner USB drivers. A half-installed driver can pass the first stage and fail the second. Follow our driver guide to do a clean reinstall: Allwinner USB driver installation guide. After reinstalling, reboot before flashing again.
- Turn off antivirus / Windows Defender real-time protection temporarily. Security software sometimes intercepts the driver mid-transfer. Disable it only for the duration of the flash, then turn it back on.
Then restart PhoenixSuit and flash again from the beginning. The progress bar should sail past 7% within a minute.
Prevention: Keep It Stable Next Time
- Always flash with the same known-good shielded cable you tested with.
- Do not touch the device or the cable while flashing.
- Close other heavy programs — CPU spikes can starve the USB transfer.
- Keep the driver installed and untouched between flashes.

FAQ
Is my device bricked if it froze at 7%?
No. The freeze happens before the system partition is written, and Allwinner devices stay in FEL (recovery) mode. Unplug, restart PhoenixSuit, fix the USB issue, and flash again — the device will recover.
Why does the same setup sometimes work and sometimes freeze at 7%?
Marginal cables and noisy ports are borderline: they pass the low-speed first stage but fail under the sustained high-speed transfers of the second stage. Slight changes in temperature or USB bus load tip it over the edge. A proper shielded cable removes the randomness.
Should I try a different firmware image?
Almost never the cause. The 7% freeze is a USB communication problem, not a corrupt image. Fix the cable and port first; only suspect the image if the flash fails at the same late percentage with a known-good cable.
How long should I wait before deciding it is frozen?
If the bar has not moved for 5 minutes at 7%, it is not going to move. Cancel, fix the USB side, and restart the flash.
