PhoenixCard is the SD card flashing method for Allwinner devices: instead of connecting your TV box to a PC over USB, you write a bootable firmware image onto an SD card, insert it into the box, and let the device flash itself on boot. It is frequently recommended in community forums (e.g. Pine64, CNX Software, GetDroidTips) as the fallback when the USB method fails — the rule of thumb being: if your TV box has a red LED (hard brick), use the SD card method.
When to Use SD Card Flashing (vs USB)
| Scenario | SD Card (PhoenixCard) | USB (PhoenixSuit) |
|---|---|---|
| Red-LED hard brick | ✅ Best choice — device flashes itself at boot | ❌ May not be detected over USB |
| No USB cable / no PC nearby | ✅ Only needs a card reader | ❌ Requires PC + USB cable |
| Flashing many boxes | ✅ Clone one card, flash batch after batch | Slow, one box at a time |
| Normal upgrade | Works, but extra steps | ✅ Simpler single-box workflow |
| Soft brick (detected over USB) | Works | ✅ Faster, more feedback |

What You Need
- SD card — FAT32 formatted, Class 10 or higher. Use a card at least as large as the firmware image (8 GB minimum is a safe rule for most TV box firmwares).
- Card reader — any USB card reader on a Windows PC.
- Firmware .img for your exact device model and chipset. Firmware must match model + chip + DDR/storage variant — flashing the wrong package can brick the device further.
- PhoenixCard tool — PhoenixCard is distributed through official Allwinner tool channels; reputable mirror sites carry copies. This site does not currently host the tool, so obtain it from a source you trust and scan it before use.
Card-Flashing Overview (General Steps)
- Install the Allwinner USB drivers on your PC if you have not already — see the Allwinner USB driver guide.
- Insert the SD card into your card reader and format it as FAT32.
- Open PhoenixCard, select the correct firmware .img file, and write it to the SD card.
- Power the TV box off completely (unplug it), insert the SD card into the box’s SD slot.
- Power the box on. The device detects the bootable card and starts flashing automatically — do not unplug or interrupt power during this process.
- When the on-screen process completes, power the box off and remove the SD card before the first normal boot, or the box may flash itself again on every boot.
After Flashing: First Boot
With the card removed, power the box on normally. The first boot after a fresh firmware flash takes longer than usual (a few minutes) while the system initializes. If the box shows only a red LED and never produces video, the firmware package likely does not match your hardware variant — double-check the exact model, chipset, and memory configuration, and see the device-not-detected troubleshooting guide.
