OpenixSuit: Flash Allwinner Firmware on Linux & macOS

PhoenixSuit is Windows-only — a dead end if your daily driver runs Linux or macOS. OpenixSuit is a newer cross-platform alternative that flashes Allwinner firmware on all three. Here is what it is, how to install it, and where it still falls short.

The problem it solves

PhoenixSuit only runs on Windows. If you search for “phoenixsuit linux” or “phoenixsuit mac”, what you actually want is a way to flash Allwinner firmware without keeping a Windows machine around. Until recently, the honest answer was “there isn’t one” — the old Linux tooling (sunxi-tools scripts) is command-line only and unforgiving. OpenixSuit is the first modern GUI option for non-Windows users.

What is OpenixSuit?

OpenixSuit is a desktop application for flashing Allwinner (sunxi) firmware to devices, built to do the same job as PhoenixSuit and LiveSuit. Key facts, verified from its GitHub repository in October 2026:

  • Repository: YuzukiTsuru/OpenixSuit — created February 2026, with 169 stars and 13 forks as of October 2026.
  • Platforms: Windows, Linux, and macOS — the whole point of the project.
  • Tech stack: built with Tauri 2.x, React 19, and Rust (per the project’s own README).
  • Distribution: downloadable builds are published on the Releases page.
⚠ Honest labeling: release-only. The README states it plainly: “This repo is for releases only — it hosts downloadable builds and the i18n profile. The source code is not publicly available (yet).” So while OpenixSuit is free to download and use, it is not open-source software in the strict sense — you cannot audit or build the code yourself, at least as of October 2026.

PhoenixSuit vs OpenixSuit

AspectPhoenixSuitOpenixSuit
Platforms Windows only Windows, Linux, macOS
Source availability Closed (Allwinner proprietary) Release-only as of Oct 2026 — binaries public, source not public
FEL-mode flashing Yes Yes
Extra tooling Flashing only (companion tools are separate downloads) All-in-one: firmware converter, firmware parser, EFEL toolbox, ADB file explorer, GPIO viewer
Maturity Years of forum guides and known fixes New (2026), small community — expect rough edges
Best for Critical unbricks and proven, documented workflows Linux/macOS users, experimentation, inspecting firmware images

Installing it on each platform

Linux — install libusb and add the udev rule

On Linux, OpenixSuit talks to the device through libusb, which needs a udev rule so a normal user account can access the Allwinner FEL device (VID 1f3a, PID efe8). Without it, the app simply will not see your box. The rule, copied from the project README:

ACTION==”add”, SUBSYSTEM==”usb”, ATTRS{idVendor}==”1f3a”, ATTRS{idProduct}==”efe8″, MODE=”666″, GROUP=”users” TEST==”power/autosuspend”, ATTR{power/autosuspend}=”-1″

Save that line as a file (for example 99-allwinner.rules) into /etc/udev/rules.d/ or /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/, then reload the rules:

sudo udevadm control –reload

Unplug and re-plug the device in FEL mode afterwards. If it still does not appear, confirm libusb is installed via your distro’s package manager.

macOS — download the build, check libusb if needed

Grab the macOS build from the Releases page. OpenixSuit uses the libusb backend on macOS — if the app does not detect your device in FEL mode, installing libusb (e.g. brew install libusb) and retrying is the first thing to check.

Windows — download and run

Windows builds are on the same Releases page and need no extra setup beyond what PhoenixSuit itself needs — you still want the Allwinner USB drivers installed so Windows recognizes the FEL device.

What it can do

Beyond basic flashing, OpenixSuit ships as a small toolbox. The components listed in the project README:

Allwinner IMG Flash

Flash sunxi-format firmware images to devices, with device detection, image validation, and progress tracking.

Sector IMG Flash

Sector-based flashing with an MBR partition editor — add, edit, delete, and reorder partitions.

Generic IMG Flash

Flash raw images with logic-offset auto-detection and support for SDMMC, NOR, and UFS storage.

Firmware Converter

Pack and convert firmware formats, including SPI NOR and block-device (SD/eMMC/UFS) converters.

EFEL Toolbox

Low-level FEL-mode debugging: memory read/write, hex view with disassembly, DRAM init.

Firmware Parser

Parse .img files: view headers, partition tables, Boot0/U-Boot headers, sysconfig, and DTB.

ADB File Explorer

Browse and manage files on Android devices connected via ADB (copy, move, upload, download).

GPIO Viewer

Inspect GPIO state on connected devices.

Honest limitations

  • It is new. The repository was created in February 2026. There is no decade of forum threads to search when something goes wrong — the community is small and bug reports go to the project’s Issues tab.
  • Release-only, not open source (yet). You cannot audit the code that talks to your hardware at a low level. If that matters to you, weigh it accordingly.
  • For a critical unbrick, Windows + PhoenixSuit is still the proven path. If the device is your daily driver and must come back to life, use the tool with the documented fixes: our step-by-step PhoenixSuit guide covers the full process including the common stuck-at-0% and stuck-at-7% failures.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenixSuit open source?

Not strictly — at least not as of October 2026. The project README says the repository is release-only: it hosts downloadable builds, but the source code is not publicly available. It is free to use, but you cannot inspect or build the code yourself.

Does OpenixSuit work on macOS?

Yes. OpenixSuit publishes macOS builds on its GitHub Releases page, alongside Windows and Linux builds. It uses the libusb backend on macOS, so install libusb if the device is not detected.

OpenixSuit does not see my device on Linux — how do I fix it?

Install libusb and add the project’s udev rule for the Allwinner FEL device (VID 1f3a, PID efe8) to /etc/udev/rules.d/, run sudo udevadm control --reload, then unplug and re-plug the device while it is in FEL mode.

Should I replace PhoenixSuit with OpenixSuit on Windows?

There is little reason to. On Windows, PhoenixSuit is the mature, documented option with known fixes for every common failure. OpenixSuit’s real value is giving Linux and macOS users a GUI flashing tool — and its firmware parser and converter are handy on any platform.

OpenixSuit GitHub Releases

Always download from the project’s own Releases page — never from re-upload mirrors. On Windows? Use PhoenixSuit instead.
