Backup Before Flashing: Don’t Lose Your Stock ROM

Flashing always carries risk. The difference between a bad flash you recover from and a dead box is one thing: a backup. Here’s what to save before you touch anything.

Why Backing Up Comes First

Ask anyone who has bricked a TV box what they regret most. It’s never the flash — it’s discovering after a bad flash that there is no original firmware to go back to:

  • A bad flash without a backup = no way back. The stock firmware for your exact board revision may be impossible to find later.
  • Sellers delete download links. That firmware ZIP on the product page today can be gone next month.
  • Forum threads die. Community stock dumps disappear when file hosts expire or threads get abandoned.
  • Your exact revision may never get a public dump. Budget boxes ship in silent hardware revisions; nobody may ever upload your board’s image.
  • Backup takes minutes; regret lasts. Five minutes now beats days of hunting — or a dead box.

What PhoenixSuit Can (and Can’t) Back Up

Connect the box to your PC in normal (powered-on) mode, open PhoenixSuit, and switch to the Device tab. It offers to back up your installed applications. Be honest about its limits:

WhatPhoenixSuit backup covers it?What to do instead
Installed appsYes — Device tab → backup—
App settings / dataPartiallyUse the apps’ own backup/export features where they exist
Full system image (.img)NoKeep a copy of the original firmware .img you flash with — that file is your system backup
Bootloader / partitionsNoDon’t touch them unless a trusted guide tells you to
The key insight: your most important “backup” isn’t made with a backup button — it’s the firmware file itself. Save the exact .img you flash, labeled with model + hardware revision + date, and you always have a way back to a working system.

Where to Keep Your Backup

  • Two places minimum: on your PC and a second copy on a USB stick or cloud storage. One copy is no copy.
  • Label everything: TX1_H313_2+16GB_2026-10-15.img — model, chip, RAM/storage, date. Future-you won’t remember which file was which.
  • Keep the driver installer too: if you ever need to reflash from a different PC, you’ll want the Allwinner USB drivers handy — drivers page.

No Backup and the Box Is Already Bricked?

If you’re reading this after the disaster, don’t flash a random image out of desperation — the wrong firmware makes things worse. Do this instead:

  • Contact the seller and ask for the factory .img for your exact model and hardware revision. This works more often than people expect.
  • Search the XDA forums for a thread matching your exact model — community stock dumps live there.
  • Browse our Allwinner firmware hub for model-specific guidance on honest firmware sources.
  • Never flash another model’s image just because the chip name matches — wrong board, wrong RAM config, or wrong Wi-Fi chip means a deeper brick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I store the backup?

In two places: on your PC and on a second copy (USB stick or cloud storage). Label the file with model + hardware revision + date, e.g. TX1_H313_2+16GB_2026-10-15.img, so you can identify it months later.

Can PhoenixSuit back up the whole box as an .img file?

No. PhoenixSuit’s Device-tab backup covers installed applications, not a full system image. Your real ‘system backup’ is the original firmware .img file itself — keep a copy of every file you flash.

I already flashed and lost everything. Can I get my data back?

No — flashing with format wipes the box completely, and there’s no undo. Focus on getting a working box again with the correct firmware for your exact model.

Should I back up before every flash?

Yes. Even when you’re reflashing the same ROM, save a fresh copy of the .img and your app backup first. It takes minutes; hunting down firmware later can take days or fail entirely.
