X96Q Firmware Download & Flashing Guide
Read this first: X96Q boxes ship with different chips depending on the batch. Only the Allwinner versions can be flashed with PhoenixSuit.
โฌ Download PhoenixSuit ๐ USB DriversStep 0: Confirm Which Chip Your X96Q Has
| Check | How |
|---|---|
| Seller listing / packaging | The spec sheet should name the chip โ look for “Allwinner” vs “Amlogic S905” |
| About screen (working box) | Settings โ About device โ CPU/chip line |
| Open the case | The marking printed on the SoC itself is definitive |
If yours is Amlogic (S905): stop here โ use the Amlogic flashing tool for that chip, not PhoenixSuit. The rest of this guide applies only to Allwinner-based X96Q units.
Identify Your Box
X96Q units also vary in RAM/storage (common: 1+8GB, 2+16GB). Check the sticker on the bottom of the box and match the exact configuration when hunting for firmware โ a 2+16GB image on a 1+8GB board is a classic brick recipe.
Where to Find the Firmware
To get the right .img package:
- Go to the seller page where you bought the box (or the brand’s support page) and look for a firmware/download section matching your exact model name + hardware revision.
- Check the sticker on the bottom of the box and the packaging โ the hardware revision (e.g. V2.1, 2+16GB) must match the firmware package.
- Never use a generic package: a firmware built for a different board or RAM/storage configuration can brick the device even if the chip name matches.
- If the seller provides no firmware, contact them and ask for the factory .img for your exact revision before attempting anything.
How to Flash with PhoenixSuit
- Install the Allwinner USB drivers on your Windows PC first โ without them PhoenixSuit cannot see the box in FEL mode. Download the drivers ยท full walkthrough on our drivers page.
- Install PhoenixSuit from the official package (see download page for version notes).
- Get the correct firmware .img for your exact model and hardware revision (see the section above). Place it somewhere you can find it.
- Open PhoenixSuit, go to the Firmware tab and click Image to select your .img file.
- Power the box OFF completely (unplug the power adapter). Hold the reset button (tiny pinhole, usually on the bottom or back), then connect the box to your PC with a USB cable while keeping reset pressed for a few seconds. The box enters FEL (flash) mode โ PhoenixSuit should detect it.
- PhoenixSuit will ask whether to format. Choose Yes for a clean flash. Warning: this wipes all data on the box.
- Click Upgrade and wait. Do not unplug the USB cable or the PC until the green success bar appears.
- Unplug, connect the box to your TV and power it on. The first boot after flashing takes several minutes โ be patient.
Unbrick Tips
If your box won’t boot after a bad flash, work through these before giving up:
- Re-enter FEL mode carefully: unplug everything, hold reset, then plug in USB. Timing matters โ try a few times.
- Swap the cable and USB port: cheap charge-only cables are a classic failure point. Use a known-good data cable and a rear motherboard USB port.
- Reinstall the drivers: a yellow exclamation mark in Windows Device Manager means the driver didn’t stick. See the drivers page.
- Try a different PC โ driver conflicts on one machine sometimes vanish on another.
- Check the power supply: after flashing, boot with the original 5V/2A adapter. Underpowered adapters cause boot loops that look like bricks.
- Flash the correct .img again โ most “bricks” are just the wrong firmware. Reflash with the right file for your exact model + hardware revision.
๐งฑ Bricked beyond repair?
If repeated unbrick attempts fail, the board may be physically damaged โ replacing it with a same-chip new box is usually cheaper than repair:
Same-line replacement if your X96Q board is dead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I flash the wrong firmware?
Flashing a firmware package built for a different model, board revision, RAM/storage configuration โ or worse, for the wrong chip family (Amlogic image on an Allwinner board or vice versa) โ can brick the box permanently. Always verify the chip first, then match the exact model and hardware revision. Never use a generic image.
My X96Q has an Amlogic S905. Can I still use PhoenixSuit?
No. PhoenixSuit is an Allwinner-only tool and cannot flash Amlogic chips. Use the flashing tool made for Amlogic SoCs instead.
How do I know which X96Q variant I have?
Check the seller listing or packaging spec sheet for the chip name, look at Settings โ About on a working box, or open the case and read the marking on the SoC itself.
PhoenixSuit doesn’t detect the box โ is it bricked?
Not necessarily. Detection failures are usually drivers, a charge-only USB cable, or not holding reset while connecting (FEL mode). Work through the unbrick checklist above before assuming hardware damage.
